Ecodriving presentation, energy-efficient driving training and discussion during the “Days of the Town of Detva 2014“DSC 0280VyrezZm Ecodr

On Saturday 4th October 2014, there were driving ecologically in Detva. During the "Days of the Town of Detva" Daniel Lešinský, a chairman of a civic association CEPTA, together with Miss Slovakia 2014 Laura Longauerová explained to the participants via funny style what ecodriving is and which kinds of transport are considered to be ecological.

After a short ecodriving course, the individual drives followed. During these drives, 5 participants had a possibility to try the principles of economic driving in practice with a certified instructor. The drives were performed by delegates of the biggest car school in the region, the mayor of Detva, the head of town of Hriňová, as well as by Polish delegate from a partner town Tuchow.

The participants were driving from Detva to Hradná (8 km) in their own routine way of driving and then, after a short training, they took the same route according to advice of ecodriving instructor. The results were evaluated by a software and are summarised in the table below.

The mayor of Detva managed to drive the second best result of the training day, saving more than 20% of fuel. It also means 20% less greenhouse gases, 20% less detrimental emissions in the air and 20% financial savings for fuel.

What is ecodriving?IMG 7259 VyrezZm

It is possible to save up to 20 % of fuel consumption by energy-efficient driving. This saves
your money, as well as the environment. However, ecodriving is a broader term. It begins with
the choice of an appropriate means of transport, continues through choosing the right car at
acquisition, energy-efficient driving, smart use of air-conditioning, and ends with environmentally friendly car washing. Ecodriving is the approach, which reduces detrimental effects of driving or mobility on the environment.

Before you start the engine

Before you get into a car, think about other ways of transport that could be better. An alternative could be faster than a car, mainly during rush traffic hours. Up to 1 km prefer walking, to 10 km prefer biking or city transport. Up to 100 km use public transport or car, up to 1000 km travel by train. Travelling by train or public transport for long distances has a lot of advantages – it is quick, safe and you do not have to drive. You can work on your laptop, read a book, watch countryside or just relax. Nowadays it is a standard that european high-speed trains (TGV, ICE, RAILJET, etc.) exceed the speed of 200 km per hour.

If we need to use a car, we do not have to own it

Car-sharing means to have an available car, but not to own it. This decreases the number of cars in the cities. More information you can find in the Technical report. Car-sharing is widespread in Germany and in Western Europe countries.

Carpooling means sharing of car journeys, so that more than one person travels in a car. It is cheaper and environmentally more friendly than the case when everybody drives their own car. Another benefit is connecting of people and helping each other.

Miss Slovakia 2014 gets involved in activities for cleaner air in Slovakia PDF Print E-mail

altAir protection is supported also by Miss Slovakia 2014, Laura Longauerová from Detva, who is actively involved in environmental protection activities, e.g. ecodriving promotion. She explains: “We should not live just for the present, it is necessary to take care of the environment, where also our children are supposed to live. Ecodriving is one of the activities how everyone of us can contribute to the protection of air, climate and can reduce fuel consumption of their car.

Civic association CEPTA organized a press conference in Bratislava on 2nd June 2014, where the following items were presented:

1. ecodriving - content and principles,

2. ecodriving logo,

3. requirements of CEPTA on the EU Environment Council in Luxembourg on 12th June 2014.

More information you can find in an attached press release, in a letter to the Minister of Environment and in requirements of CEPTA below (in Slovak only).

Photographs from the press conference can be seen here.

Video recording from the Environment Council meeting in Luxembourg on 12th June 2014 can be seen here. The Slovak Republic was represented by the state secretary Ján Ilavský (see recording from 1:42:00 to 1:44:30). We regret that the Ministry of Environment of the Slovak Republic lacks an ambition of principal modernisation of medium combustion plants, for which the EU funds can be used. In the requirements presented on behalf of the Slovak Republic (keeping of status quo untill lifetime of present devices, moderation of limits for district heating, for various kinds of fuel and for devices that heat less than 2000 hours a year) a significant and measurable state improvement is blocked for dozens of years.
